Old age can lead to cats losing hair. Also it could be cancer, or stress. If the daily routine has changed around the cat, it is most likely stress.

Hair loss in cats can be a particularly vexing problem, as there can be quite a variety of causes and contributing factors. Medical problems commonly associated with feline hair loss are hyperthyroidism, endocrine alopecia, ringworm and other parasites, and allergies (with primary allergens being food, fleas and medications). Non-medical causes are typically stress and anxiety related.

Hair loss is due to parasites, allergies, or illness. It is ALWAYS a reason for concern and need to see a vet.

Lots of things can cause cats to loose their hair, most commonly because of over grooming and this can be from stress or just bordem. Cats can get cancer, this is another common cause as well as fleas.
