What causes a brown discharge and pain?

From where? There are few places on the body that have a thick enough mucus membrane to 'discharge'. Regardless, brown color can be many things. Dried blood mixed in pus, for example. It sounds like you have something infected some where.

Brown discharge is often a sign of old blood being expelled from the body, left over from your last period.
