The fluid that was "breathed" in "The Abyss" was not liquid oxygen, but a fluorocarbon saturated with oxygen. Liquid breathing is still very experimental, but has obvious applications in diving, space travel and medical treatment.

The "liquid oxygen" used in "The Abyss" is a perfluorocarbon. It is primarily used when the lungs cannot take in O2 from air, such as smoke inhalation and severe infection.
