Iodine is an element with atomic number 53 and a weight of 126.9 g/mol. It is a purple crystal at standard temperature and pressure, but readily sublimes to produce a gas. It is most commonly encountered as tincture of iodine. It is used as a catalyst in chemistry, and as a disinfectant in medicine.
