Can I put iodine on a horse's frog?

My horse has a sore frog, or sore front feet, I have heard that you can use iodine to help relieve the pain.

Iodine will not relieve pain on a foot sore horse, however it is a great treatment to increase the hardness of the hoof and toughen the sole which will help prevent the problem in future.

I am not sure that the iodine would relieve any pain the horse is suffering but it will disinfect it a little and stop further infection. This in time may aid the healing process and thus reduce the pain that the horse is suffering. I would contact your local vet.

You can do that. If it doesn't work take some warm water and put it in a bucket that can fit a foot. Then you add some Epsom salt. Let your horse soak it's feet in there one at a time for 20 minutes each. This will help relieve some of the pain and any swelling.

Actually the best thing for sore feet in a horse is to soak the foot. If your horse will let you put it's foot in a basin of warm water for 10-15 minutes. If he won't hold still for that you can spray hot water on him with a hose.

Iodine won't do anything to relieve the pain of sore feet although it will help toughen the sole and prevent the problem in the future.

Iodine is ideally used as a drying agent and is generally used to help harden soft frog on horses. Further examination can help find the cause of sore frog.

Iodine is not a pain reliever- applying to the sole of the hoof or frog will reduce bacterial growth and encourage outer most cells to toughen. If you wish to relive pain, try cold hosing the feet and legs for 10 minutes, twice daily. Talk to your farrier for help.

Let your farrier look at the frog to see if there is infection deep inside. If there is, the farrier ought to be able to puncture the area & let it drain. Then follow with epson salt solution to soak out the infection. Soak for 10-15 min then wrap.
