508 non profits deal with volunteers. It appears that (c)(1)(a) deals with limited liability. In order to fully understand all the ramifications of this, it is best if you take advantage of the free information on the IRS website providing guidelines for non profits. If you have any doubt of liability, consult the attorney associated with your organization.

A Section 508(c) nonprofit is a religious organization. They are exempt from the same income taxes that a 501(c) nonprofit is but cannot involve in political activities.

Section 508(c)(1)(a) of the Internal Revenue Code deals with churches and other religious institutions, which are excused from taxes as long as they deal exclusively with religious and charitable works.
