Special care must be taken to lower the amount of sodium in the dog's diet, and exercise should be restricted. Diuretics often help with edema. It is best to handle the dog as little as possible and ensure it gets plenty of rest and does no over-exert itself.

Edema is a symptom- given his age, you want to check his protein levels, adjust his feed for an older dog's needs. However, this is an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed- it is a SYMPTOM of something else, to keep him with you longer, you need an answer.

The dog will exhibit a low activity level due to the edema, as I'm guessing that it's pulminary in nature. Depending on the severity of the edema, the animal may require oxygen at times to breathe, and for a dog this age the longterm outlook is not good.

Your golden is a that age that the heart, lungs and blood vessels start to collapse and put o\more pressure on the heart to pump the needed blood to the extremities. The problem with edema is a weak pump and poor circulation back to the heart causing the pooling effect.
