Is his sleeping area comfortable? Is he in the same room as you? There could be many reasons why he's not sleeping enough, the same as people. Stress, strange noises, and even separation anxiety. Goldens are known for separation anxieties, talk to your vet, make sure there are no underlying medical causes, there are medications available for anxieties.

Give a small dose of melatonin, which is a natural sleep aid. This can be found in drug and department stores in the vitamin and supplement section. A 300 mcg dose should be sufficient. You can wrap the pill in a small piece of cheese or bread to help the dog swallow it.

Dogs who are experiencing sleep problems may have a bladder infection. Get a sample of his urine and take to your vet. A more serious ailment would be Cushings Disease which is an overactive adrenal gland. This causes the dog to pace frequently at night. See your Vet right away.

If the dog is young that could be whats doing it I had a retriever for 11 years and for the first three he was like the tazmanian devil before he started to calm down and I took mine to the vet and he told me they are a really hyper dog until they get older or get some training.
