I need to use brown sugar but it has become hard.

Put it in a sealed container with either a large piece of cut apple or a piece of fresh bread. This will help moisten it.

Brown sugar still has molasses in it, so it sticks to itself. Just put it in a bowl and crush it with a fork.

Take a spoon or a fork, hit it really hard a few times and use the broken pieces. You can soften it further in the microwave
