What can I do if I don't like office politics and need to work independently?

I work in a large office right now and there is a lot of politics.

Better you start a business of the field now you are working. You could shine well in your business as you can work independently. This will help you get rid of office politics. Another suggestion is to switch over to any other corporate company as this problem can be rectified.

It is not a good idea to quit your job. But you can certainly start looking for another one, especially since you have now learned that you are more comfortable in a smaller group or working alone. In the meantime, try to be only professionally friendly to everyone.

it would be better if you start your own business or work from home. working from home involves various options in online like forex trading,stock trading,writing articles,blogging,or creating a website and luring traffic can fetch you more dollars if you do things creatively and innovatively. this jobs involve your own work and no outside politics,pressure. try business with a group of friends

Make a business case for telecommuting part of the work week, either as improved productivity or to offset a raise you did not get by decreasing your transportation costs. You could also ask to shift your work hours to provide coverage when others are not there, decreasing contact.
