What can I do for my German shepherd who has a ripped dewclaw?

Apply pressure till bleeding stops. Apply triple antibiotic and tape the claw down. Be sure to change dressing frequently. This is often very painful so pain pills from the vet may be needed. Surgery can also remove the claw.

While painful, these injuries can usually wait till the next business day for a vet visit. Clean the area using dog-safe soap and warm water, and spray it with a chewing deterrent. If bleeding is persistent, or the wound appears infected, go to the emergency room.

Make sure that the area around the dewclaw is completely clean, then bandage and put neosporin on it. Take the dog to the vet as soon as possible for medication.

Wash with water and soap at least twice a day. If it is oozing, severely swollen, or infected take the dog to the vet. The vet may be able to give you pain medication until it gets better. Or call your local SPCA or humane society and ask them if they can tell you what to do.

Not much I hate DewClaws I think they should be romoved at birth. The only thing I know of that you can do is wrap it so it wont jar.

Most people have the dogs dewclaws removed when they are puppies when they are spayed/neutered since they are unnecessary and are known to rip easily. My only suggestion is having them removed since one is already torn although they will have to wear a head cone to avoid them from licking or trying to nibble at the itchy stitches.

Remove the german shepherd nail if it is barely attacked and clen it and you have to put a thick wrap on it.
