The best resolution is to have the cat trimmed regularly. We have a cat called fluffy and his hair was matted unbelievable,so we decided to have him groomed with the loin cut about 4 times a year,no more matting. He looks cute and is comfortable.

Prevent matted fur by brushing your cat on a regular basis. Once the fur is matted you can try to tease the mats apart with a cat brush and comb. This may not work, so you will need to cut the mats out or take your cat to a groomer.

If it is a big mat then cut it out, if you can get the cat to sit still. Otherwise comb, brush, comb, brush until all the area is clear of mats.

Prevention is the best method for mats. First, brush your cat every day. Next, Bathe as needed (yes cats need baths too). Cut out the mats as a last resort.
