There are allot of reasons for eye problems in cats: allergy, trauma, inflammation, ulcers, etc. The best way to determine the problem is to take the cat to the vet.

A few things can cause your cat to have eye problems. One thing is high blood pressure. This can cause something called retinal atrophy. This will cause a detoration of eye sight and is not treatable. It really depends on what kind of problems the car is having. Another reason may just be old age.

One of the most common eye problems in cats is caused by a herpes virus, which causes mucousy discharge, swelling of the conjuctiva (eyelids) and can lead to corneal ulcers. This is a contagious disease between cats and needs to be treated by your veterinarian. They usually prescribe eye ointment and occasionally oral antibiotics.

The most common cause of eye problems in cats is an upper respiratory infection. These infections are viral and usually run their course but the eyes must be kept clean and allowed to drain. Terramycin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment are frequently used. If the eye problem is caused by a Herpes virus, the problem will probably be recurring.
