Eye infections or just messed up tear ducts can cause that. Take a soft q-tip and tip it in warm water... very gently cleanse around the lids to loosen them up. Once you can see better check for yellow pus, blood etc... if you see anything out of the ordinary take your kitty to the vet!

It sounds like your cat has an eye infection and may need medication. I would take him to the vet as soon as possible.
