What is the best way to tell which of my cats is peeing on the carpet?

You can't with multiple cats. The best method is prevention. Clean the litter box daily, avoid leaving clothing laying around, and using a correct cleaning solution containing enzymes to completely eat away the smell when the cat does pee on the carpet. Cats like to pee on whatever smells already.

The way we determined which of our cats was responsible was to take each of the cats and place them on the exact spot on the carpet that has urine on it. We found that the cat that was responsible would stay put while the other cats would run away from the smell.

The best way to be absolutely certain, provided you have the equipment, would be to set up a video camera or webcam to monitor them when you are not watching.
