As far as I know, wage garnishing is perfectly legal. My wages were garnushed years ago for several thousand dollars. I do remember I had to sign an agreement for the company to take my money. Actually because they took the money before I got my check, I really didn't miss it. Yes, you do have to sign an agreement.

Get a reputable lawyer right away, they will be able to tell you what is happening and what you can do about it.

Your wages cannot be garnished without a court order except by the Internal Revenue Service for back taxes. If a court order is issued, even if by default, it will result in a notification letter sent to you.
