Wives tales are those stories passed down through the generations about things. Examples would be the belief in earlier times that a cat could steal a baby's breath or that a woman who floated was a witch.

A wives tale is a story believed by many to be true, but that cannot or may not be proved. It is also a story that may be true, but there may not be a way to conclusively test it or testing may be inconclusive. Usually told by a person of an older generation to a younger generation.

Wives tales are generally sayings that were considered to be true, but may not be scientifically proven. For example, there is an old wives' tale that says that if you are craving sweets when pregnant, you are having a girl baby, or if you are carrying high, then you are also having a girl.
