Diesels can be difficult to start in cold temperatures without glow plugs - which are prone to failure. Long crank times are hard on batteries. Diesel also gels when cold.
In general, diesel tractors run ver well and really don't need a whole ton of maitenance to stay running. If you are buying a new tractor I wouldn't even worry.
