The main way to protect a forest is to make sure all fires are put out once a human leaves them behind; even a spark can start a fire.

Donating money to organizations like GreenPeace can help, and also cutting back on wood furniture and going for another alternative will help preserve the rain forest.

I think the best ways are to pressure Congress and politicians to enact more legislation which protects the environment and sets aside land to be preserved. Our country thankfully has done this in many places, but there are lots of forests which are still being cleared and destroyed for various reasons.
