Early poetry took the form of Greek Epic poetry. There are also many famous sonnets by Shakespeare, and later romantic, metaphysical, and war poetry (Siegfried Sassoon), and most recently, twentieth century poetry such as Philip Larkin and W.B. Yeats.

Popular forms include acrostic- certain letters form words/sentences. Ballad- tells a story. Couplet 2 line stanza rhymes. haiku- 3 unrhyming lines5-7-5. Sonnet- 14 lines rhyme scheme. Many other forms available.
