Symptoms of a catheter infection will be loss of appetite, lethargy, fever. Your dog will not be acting like himself and the symptoms should be considerably noticeable. Take him to a vet if you suspect infection as symptoms will get much worse very quickly.

Some symptoms can be inflammation, pus buildup, and fever, among others. The most obvious sign of any infection is a fever.

They can involve the bladder, prostate, urethra, or kidneys. Symptoms aren't usually present, but sometime include frequent urination, lower abdominal pain, or dysuria (painful urination). If you suspect an infection the easiest way to test is to have your vet perform a urinalyisis and culture. That is the only way I know of to check for infections.
