Start with measuring the area and ordering enough slate and add a waste factor, colors can change with different shipments. Clean loose particles from the concrete. Choose your pattern and layout before spreading thinset across the concrete with a trowel, notched side down. Place your slate and move around with downward force. Repeat. Clean. Grout after slate is set.

The smartest way to do it would be talk to a professional and tell them you want to do this DIY and they will be able to tell you everything you need to know they may even have pamphlets they can give to you.

The best thing to do is to make sure the concrete is clean and dry and then you can get a grout that is made for concrete and it'll hold.

Prepping the surface is going to be the most important part. You will most likely have to use a gritty grout to make sure the tiles adhere to the concrete.

Do it over the existing surface. Check that the surface is in level. Make a cement slurry mixed with australian glue, apply over the surface, lay the patioslate over it.

If the concrete steps are already in place, you'll have to buy the patio slate and mortar them into place. It's realatively simple, but get a permit.
