start by using 2x4's and start framing as if you are framing a wall inside and attach to the existing outer soffit with nails or lag screws.

Well to change the width of the roof, you can easily purchase shingles and have them installed over your roof. To install shingles, you can buy a simple do it yourself book from Home Depot which will enable you to widen the width of the roof as per your preferences.
