Echinacea has no scientifically proven effect on diseases they are usually given for, i.e. rhinitis and flu. There can be some side effects however, but they are usually allergic in nature. Difficult breathing, purpura, nausea, cramps and myalgia could occur but should disappear when you stop taking echinacea.

A fever can occur, so can vomiting. Serious side affects can be an allergic reaction; which causes swelling of the lips, tongue...etc.
