What are the recommended baby items for new parents?

There are so many items on the market that are very usefull, for example the ultimate crib sheet, and boudreaux butt paste. Bottles I would wait till you know what the baby is going to accept and do not buy to much of one kind of diaper for in case of allergic reacations.

Any books on parenting would be good (Baby Whisperer is excellent), monitors, plenty of receiving blankets and sleepers and diapers.

A cradle swing. This was my favorite item with both boys. The swinging is very soothing to them when they are fussy.

They will always need a car seat, stroller, crib, bottles, footies, onezies, sweater and cap, pants, shirts, socks, pajamas, crib toys, playpen, monitor, light for bedroom. Don't buy, pillow, if its summer don't buy winter clothes for the coming months, they will probably not fit. Go to your local baby store and have fun.
