Corrosion of the tank walls leading to contamination of the surrounding soil and, potentially, the ground water. Difficulty in inspecting exterior of tank. Depending on the size of the tank may require heavy equipment to place or replace. Tank is not visible, possibility of damaging tank during any construction work taking place in the area around the tank.

The biggest problem with storing gasoline tanks in the ground is soil contamination. Depending on what material is used as a container, corrosion could be a huge factor. When the tank seeps gasoline, it hazardous materials do not only get in the soil, they could seep down into underwater streams and contaminate water sources.

Prior to undertaking this task, you must hire a surveyor to inspect the site planned for the storage. This is done to determine the water level which could eventually corrode the tank at a later time. The tank should be placed into a reinforced contained unit equipped with and overflow safety valve to an auxiliary tank, to hod a leak.
