There are plenty kinds of human development theories including Sigmund Freud's Psychodynamic Theory, Erik Erikson's Psycho-Social Theory, Attachment Theory, Social Learning Theory,Cognitive-Developmental Theory and the Cognitive-Mediation Theory. I believe that Erik Erikson's Psycho-Social Theory is the most accurate, which explains how life is a set of lessons and challenges that help us to grow.

Sigmund Freud's Psychodynamic Theory is the most popular and includes Freud's five stages of psycho-sexual development. Erik Erikson's Psycho-Social Theory is also popular and explains how human development spans our entire life times. This theory also helps to explain identity crisis and other problems in human development. There are dozens more, but these two are the most popular.
