The most important historical event is very subjective. I would say the European Exploration would perhaps qualify as the most important. This led to the discovery of many new lands including the Americas. The resulting development of the Slave Trade, colonization of foreign lands and its effects has perhaps had the greatest impact on world history.

The two world wars are generally regarded as the most important historical events, both in the way they involved most of the world's population as well as their effects.
