What are the judges looking for in a dressage suitability class?

Judges will examine the quality of a horse's gaits at the walk, trot and canter. They are looking for good confirmation, freedom and balance of movement, flexibility and proper acceptance of the bit. They may ask for an extended trot and canter to examine a horse's ability to extend the length or their gate while maintaining the bit and balance.

The judges watch both the horse and rider to make sure you execute the moves properly. The horse is judged on how well he moves and his form. The rider is judged based on how well they ride and follow pattern.

Depending on what level dressage you are in the judges will look to see if you and your horse have mastered the skills that are expected of your level.

They will be looking at how responsive your horse is to your aids. He has to be calm, engaged, and willing. Make sure you have taught him how to collect and go on the bit. And ride with as soft a hand as you can; the judges don't want to see any horse that is being forced to collect.
