First, start collecting paper, etc. for your covering. Adding the occasional three dimensional object can look cool, too. If the surface you are planning to cover is non-porous, it's a good idea to sand it first so the glue adheres better. Get a brush you don't mind trashing. In my experience, that 1970s staple, ModPodge, is still the best glue.
