The essential element is the large timber trim on the outside of the house in either black or brown. They usually also have large chimneys and steeply pitched roofs.

A Tudor style house has elements which echo mediaeval building methods including white rendering broken up by black timbers. They also have large heavy chimneys with decorative tops, tall narrow windows with small panes known as leaded light windows. Roofs are often of steep pitch or may be thatched and doorways are arched.
