The best hotels to stay in New York City (and this is from experience) is the Milford Plaza Hotel and the Pennsylvania Hotel.

I would stay at the Renaissance hotel. It is very classy and the breakfast is superb. The Fairmont hotel is very great as well.

Location is most important as there are lots of accommodation choices. Decide whether you want a busy tourist area like Times Square or a quieter area such as Central Park.
