How do I start the process of finding an apartment in New York City?

I am going to soon be moving to NYC and have no idea how to even start looking for a place to live.

Determine your budget and preferred location. Make sure they are not mutually exclusive. Search the many online rental sites or engage the services of a real estate rental agent.

Craigslist has listings for the NYC area itself and the outlying suburbs in the Hudson Valley and New Jersey. Looking through those will give you an idea of what to expect but in the end, I'd recommend going with an agent. Since you'll end up paying broker fees either way, they may as well be working for you.

The easiest way to go about it is to go online and do some research. You will find tons of sites that give you virtual tours of differant appartments. This is an easy way to compare many places, without wasting time.

I would start with looking at the nyc papers online, then contacting different realtors who might rent apartments or small houses around NYC.
