If you're looking to go the purebred route, I'd suggest a Lab or Golden Retriever. They often have the best track records with patience.

Labs are the best. They are well tempered and very social. They are easy to train, friendly and playful. It's in their nature to be a very easy going breed that makes an excellent family dog.

If the kids are old enough to beg for a dog then chances are they can handle a labrador or labrador mix.

The best dogs for children are older rescues that have lived with children because you know their temperament. All breeds have individuals that do not like children.

Terriers and Huskies make great family pets! Both have a gentle disposition and are loving and playful. Labs and Retrievers also make good pets, but it is my experience that they are not too smart, but clumsy and not aware of their surroundings.

Personally, I believe that the Golden Retriever is the best dog for children. They are gentle and mild. They can be trained to accomplish many tasks, such as playing with the children and watching over them to keep them from trouble or harm.
