As a personal trainer myself, i would recommend doing light weight, high repetitions with free weights. Machines work well, but you may not know how to work a machine. This with diet, will lead to muscle toning.
I highly suggest signing up for one of the following: pilates, yoga, or aerobics. They are all excellent ways to tone the muscles without becoming bulky. They also stress-free and relaxing ways to attain a better physique.
