If the bed is natural wood, you may need to apply a layer of primer before you apply the black paint. If the bed is wood and has had any sort of varnish or polyurethane applied, you may need to strip this finish off before you will be able to prime and paint the bed.

Before painting, make sure the bed is sanded. This will remove any rough spots and give the paint a clean, smooth surface to adhere to. Wipe any sawdust off with a damp cloth and use a primer as a base coat. A plain white primer will do; there are also primers made specifically for dark paint.

First, scuff sand the bed. If it has a glossy finish, you'll need to sand enough to get rid of the shine. Next, use a tack cloth to remove dust from sanding. You will next want to apply a quality primer that has been tinted to a gray color. Finally, apply a quality black paint in a satin or semi-gloss finish, using a quality brush or roller.

first, sand the wood to take out and rough spots and to keep it smooth after paint is on. then about 2-3 coats of primer (depending on how dry the wood is). Then paint the black on, this will also probably take several coats. in the end you may be able to still see some wood grain.
