You should start off by asking him or her things about themselves. Remember that it is important to make them think you are interested in learning about them, allow them to talk about themselves.

Keep him talking about himself. It will make him more comfortable. Ask him about his job, his hobbies, and his favorites. What's his favorite restaurant? TV show? Allow him to elaborate.

Asking questions about the other person is always a good idea. People like to talk about themselves. Don't be interrogating though, respond with some information about yourself. You will want to know basic information like work, family, interests and some philosophical things to, just to find out if you want to continue the relationship.
