What are some of the great works from 19th century literature?

In English literture, the works of Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility), George Eliot (The Mill on the Floss), Charles Dickens (Bleak House, David Copperfield) or Henry James are great. In French, Victor Hugo, Honore de Balzac or Emile Zola are fascinating. In Russian, Dostoyevsky is powerful.

Any of the works of Edgar Allen Poe would be considerd excellent examples of great 19th century American literature as would the writings of Walt Whitman, particularly, 'Leaves of Grass'.
