Jane Austen, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Harper Lee, the Bronte Sisters, etc. You might refer to one of the "Top 100" books lists that came out in 2000.
I'm not sure if it's considered a classic or not but I've always been fond of Letters From The Earth and the Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain. Also very fond of the Mask of the Red Death and The Telltale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe. But those are just in my opinion.
