Tar spot is a relatively harmless maple tree disease. It begins as yellow spots on leaves and ends up a tar color. Anthracnose is related to a fungal group that causes the tree to lose its leaves; this is pretty common after a wet winter. The leaves may have a brownish purplish color along leaf veins. Maple wilt is another.
