Depending on the grade level and subject you can have some fun activity worksheets that are available free online. You can also go over homework.

There are a lot of great lesson plans on the internet. You might want to have a go-to lesson for each subject area that you can bring prepared just in case the teacher has not left any lesson plans. Something my students have liked are logic problems. You can let the kids work in partners for those who are unmotivated.

It is challenging to become a substitute teacher because you are expected to live up to the standards of the one you are substituting for. However, you don't have to copy the ways of the original teacher. Rather, be yourself. Excite them with new lessons, new learning methods. And when you leave, leave a footprint on the learning development of the students.

For one thing I am a big reader and encourage exposure to literature in my students. I sub in the younger grades and try to bring along some of my favorite books to share. ALso keep in mind games to share with whole classes, like hangman, brainquest cards, and spelling games.

This will depend upon the age and subject of your new class. Playing games similar to pictionary or jeopardy with questions relating to the class's subject can be fun and informative. Another fun activity could be figuring out riddles or having the class break into small groups to come up with their own riddles for the rest of the class.
