Buy some large calendars featuring cute puppies and kittens or safari animals. Now peruse magazines for images of scholarly items and make mini collages to hang on the walls.

Roman or Greek or egyptian themed. Have thrones and pillars make it feel like cleopatra should be sitting overlooking the party, as though they are walking back into history. You can have them all wear togas and vines in their hair or have them each come dressed as a different god or goddess

Some good ones would be pictures from youth, pictures of the school or institution graduated from, and various other memorabilia. Something different might include a stage by stage picture video of the different grades and courses of study. A projetor projecting this onto the ceiling would definately be very different.

I think a good idea would be some partially burned books are where saved from a fire, because some students use to burn the books of curses that have pass.
