Children love decorations that they can play with, we all know they often like the box more than the toy in it. Try some big cardboard cutouts of people, you can get them at comic stores etc. Optical fibre "bush" lights look great and are fun to mess with.

You can turn the party room into a jungle or rainforest by hanging green crepe paper from the ceiling and adding in cut-out animals, fruits and trees.

I had a blast when I let the kids decorate their own party by giving them confetti and can of silly string at the beginning of the party and letting them go nuts.

You can't go wrong with the typical balloons and cake, but if you are looking for more I'd suggest trying a theme. If your child loves a certain TV show or animal, shop at Party City and look for decorations that will go with that.
