The earliest example of Christian art is from the 2nd century in catacombs under Rome. Christianity had a rocky beginning and was thought of as a cult and for the lower class. Many examples of Christian art take symbols from their pagan ancestors. Including the fish the is now a universal symbol of Christianity.

Early Christian art is marked by the time when Rome was persecuting Christians. The paintings in this period were often frescoes painted on the walls of catacombs. The cross was not commonly depicted. Christ as the Shepherd or the Lamb were more common depictions.

Ample examples are hard to come by as the early Church was centered around Constantinople and a vast majority of all religious artwork was destroyed during the oconoclast movement.

The earliest Christian art is the paintings in the catacombs below Rome. It shows Christ as the Good Shepherd and Old Testament scenes such as Daniel in the Lions' Den. Other early works include small sculptures of Jonah and mosaic renditions of Christ's life and ministry in churches such as Sant' Apollinare in Nuovo.
