Alligators or other reptiles in the sewers of crowded cities are a popular myth. The concept behind these myths are that animals that are thought to be dead are flushed down the toilet but revive in the sewers. There's no truth behind these myths.

I always liked the one where a couple are parking on a hill top and hear scraping noises. The radio comes on and mentions that an escaped crazy man is loose with a hook for a hand. When the couple return home, they find a hook dangling from the door!
