Common problems are blown O2 sensors, usually due to the amount of exhaust these produce and the problems with the EGR valves and the catalytic converters on these things. Also some wiring problems.

Sierra had defective positive battery terminal. After some time, it was discovered that the defective terminal also affected the positive cable of the battery. Battery replacement was the only solution to this problem, but it was not covered under the stndererd warranty.

From the 1996 model year until GM switched the 5.3L V8 the engines had intake gasket problems (they were plastic, and cracked) that, after repaired, seemed to be good. Rust is a common problem around the rear cab corners and the wheel wells at the rear tires.

The manual transmissions are known to pop out of first gear because they weren't built with a detent ball and spring in the older models that are pretty costly to repair.
