Hip and elbow dysplasia is most common and later on in the breed's life will cause arthritis. The breed is also prone to ear infections due to their open nature and bloat being a large dog. Degenerative Myelopathy is a neurological disease that occurs with enough regularity to be considered genetic. Lastly, Von Willebrand Disease is an inherited bleeding disorder.

Hip and elbow dysplasia (these are really serious), skin irritations, panosteitis, hot spots, bloat, etc. The list can go on and on. Though these diseases are common with purebred dogs since you are essentially helping the disease by breeding two dogs that both have the condition. Do your research on the breeder before buying a dog.

Also watch for Chronic diarrhea from the ages of 1-6. These are just a few commonly known issues they have, talk to your breeder or vet to learn more.

The most common problem in the breed is perhaps hip dysplasia, which is often a problem in big dogs. Careful breeding and genetic matching help decrease the likelihood, but since there are so many "backyard breeders," the problem is often inbred and the dog suffers. Top breeders certify their Shepherds against hip dysplasia.
