German dolls often have closed mouths. They also almost always have blonde hair in pigtails. They also often have chubby over sized cheeks. In older dolls the complexion is very light.

There are several different marking that will determine if you doll is German or not. These marking would be difficult to describe and are more easily identifiable visually. Online you can find websites that have pictures of German markings posted or another option would be to find a book German doll book.
