You can be in trouble because you are holding on to property that you know for sure is stolen. Even it that fact was never disclosed upfront the fact that you know now is grounds for you to be chaged. If you don't want to involve the authorities just give it back to your friend right away.

If you know it's stolen, and you are caught, you are an accessory to the crime and can be charged as such. You are basically knowingly in possession of stolen goods, and therefore you're aiding and abetting the crime that your friend committed in stealing it. If you plan to keep that thing, don't get caught!

The laws vary from state to state. Generally speaking, however, if you knowingly possess stolen property, even if you did not steal it yourself, you have committed a crime. This is often a serious charge, and can even be a felony in many states.
