What are imperfect fungi?

Why are they called imperfect?

They are called imperfect because reproduction does not involve a sexual cycle. Therefore there is no combination of genetic material and meiosis does not occur. Spores are formed by mitosis only, the fungi are haploid. An example is the mold Penicillium, which produces the antibiotic penicillin.

Imperfect fungi are also known as Deuteromycota. These fungi are not imperfect because they lack a certain aspect of the fungal body, but because they reproduce asexually. Most fungi have been observed to reproduce sexually, however, Deuteromycota has not been observed to reproduce sexually. As a result, this type of fungus has been coined as imperfect.
